If you go, you need to get on the Canadian side, the view is much better. We stayed at a bed n breaksfast about 6 blocks east of the downtown area on the Canadian side. We walked down to the scenic areas. There is also a 'speed boat' trip on the downside of the falls which would be a thrilling ride.
