Pictures Not Loading

Post by DrDirt »

Hey WDLN, pictures imbedded in users forum messages no longer are displaying on my PC. Any ideas why I am experiencing this?
What I see is a little rey circle moving indicating the pic is trying to load, but it never finishes. I can see some info about the pic, example, one of Duke's pics showed ' From IPhone 003.jpg (2.35 MiB) Viewed 97 times', but that's all I see. It's not just pics from Iphones, its all of them. Thanks, jdb

I think this is the same problem you were having before. The more replies there are on that "Continuing Adventures..." post, the more pictures need to load at the same time when you go to the page, and the slower they will all load. It's supposed to pull those from a cache on your computer if they have not changed since the last time you visited, but maybe it's not doing that on your machine for whatever reason.

Also, the photos people post are enormous, often the original files from their cameras. Facebook and many other websites will create alternate smaller versions on their server once you upload a big picture, but the forum is not that sophisticated. What it does is display the gigantic photo in a smaller footprint on the page; it doesn't actually resize it. It tells your browser to take the big file and put it in a small space. So although they look small, you can click on them to get a bigger one, and click again to zoom in to "actual resolution"... then you'll see how big they really are! Anyway, once you get more than 2 or 3 like that on a single page it's going to need time and/or bandwidth to load them all.

Things to try: load up that post and walk away from your computer for about 30 minutes. If the photos are loaded when you get back, then your bandwidth to the rest of the world sucks (your DSL or cable connection). Complain to your ISP.

If they don't load, there may be something wrong with your cache. Try another browser. If you're using Internet Explorer, download and install Firefox, Chrome, or Safari (Safari is an Apple product but they do have a PC version). Chrome gets my vote for the best/fastest browser.

If one of those works better, you might consider changing to it.

I did just find someone who modded their forum code to include automatic image resizing upon upload. I will work on it when I get time; it's not a 1-click install. It would also not affect existing posts... only new uploads. In the meantime let me know if any of my suggestions above worked.

Google Chrome is my go-to browser on any platform. Launches fast, loads pages quickly, and updates itself invisibly (it never even asks you do to anything). It's not as bloated as Firefox or Safari and it just has one all-purpose search/address bar. Type what you want and it will either return a website or search results.

I'm all Mac at work and home so Internet Explorer is not an option for me, but even back when I had a PC it was a piece of junk.
