Belly up pan
Well I have been wanting to do this for a couple of years. The holes on my cross member have been enlarged way too much.
]
The stock nutserts are long gone which forced me to cut holes in the frame.
First on the list is a 1" motor mount lift.
and a 1" body lift.

The plan is to make a separate transmission cross member that holds the transmission up and a skid plate that protects everything.
More later!

The bolt holes in the frame
Before:
After the bung welds are ground out
These are the inserts I got from McMaster-Carr
They are 1/2" bolt hole. The plan was to just grind it out and put them in the frame but my frame is more than a little thin in that area.
I decided to put them in a metal plate first and then weld that in.
]
I am done with one side but the batteries in the camera went dead so I was not able to get any pictures.

This is what the rivet nuts look like after you crimp them down. I put a 1/2" bolt through them with some washers then used a impact to crimp them down.
Got both sides done today.
I tacked the weld bungs in place then put it all in the frame. I then crimped them down so they are holding the frame and the metal.
Yes that is my welding and not my son's. I guess that is obvious.

Re: Belly up pan
My plan is to use the stock transmission mount with out the stock bushing. It will have a cross member that attaches to the frame with leaf spring bushings so it can flex.
The mock up.
Burned in.
Another view.
I ran out of wire so I was not able to get the bushing side burned in. This what the bushings and the mount that connects to the frame looks like.

Re: Belly up pan
All welded in.
Time to cut the metal for the skid. I bought the saw from Harbor Freight. It cuts metal like butter!
I had to drop the skid down about a inch. The bolts were hitting it and it was sitting right up against the transfer case. I was a little worried that if the skid was hit the transfer case would take the blunt of the blow.

Re: Belly up pan
From the bottom. I counter sinked the bolts. I also inforced the skid with some angle iron.
All that is left is take the whole thing back down and paint it.

Tom,
Where did you get your plate from? I'm needing to find about a 2' x 6' piece of 1/4" to 1/2" thick to make a table top out of for a shop cart I have.

Re: Belly up pan
I got the steel from 14th Street Hardware in Pekin.
Have also bought steel at Premier Fabrication in Congerville. Great people to work with, not sure if they are open on Saturdays though.

Re: Belly up pan
Hang in there Tom. The compliments on the YJ2XJ rear stretch will start coming in mid December. There's a 9 month conformation/valadation process that YJ related compliments have to go through.

Thanks for clearing the whole 9 months thing.... I was beginning to think our members had eaten too much lead paint.matt4wheels wrote:Hang in there Tom. Re: Belly up pan
Thanks! I was starting to wonder if anyone even read this post.
By the way the belly up seems to be holding up.
