TJ HVAC

Post by wdln »

I'm helping a buddy next week work on his '06 TJ's air conditioning. Under-hood system is ok but it sounds like the upper vents aren't working... Just the floor output. I'm not accustomed to these new-fangled Jeep interiors, what with all the plastic, rounded corners, and luxurious creature comforts. Is the ductwork cable-actuated or vacuum? Is there a cabin air filter somewhere that I should check?

Dave - my 1998 TJ HVAC controls use cables, and have sliding levers for the temp and output selections. But a year or two later, the TJ went to rotary knobs and I think at that point abandoned the cables, for a stepper motor for temp control and ? For the output control. Sorry, my 1998 vintage help isn't all that much help.

The HVAC vent controls are vacuum actuated on my '04. There are a lot of posts and videos online that address TJ vent control / selector issues; google or youtube search would probably provide best means to investigate root cause. The vacuum lines in the dash are bright colors and about the size of #10 wire. See pictures below.

Check those fancy bright 'wires' for vacuum leaks. Amateur electricians have been known to probe them with the pointy end of a volt meter looking for live wires to tie in accessories.

Thanks everyone... I'll do my YouTube homework first. I'll be working on it next Wednesday.
