New Engine Trouble Help

Post by Duke Winch »

I have the rebuilt engine running and no codes but it has no power and just doesn't sound right, (like it's missing). I'm at a loss as where to turn to next. Will suggested I replace the crank position sensor, however my code reader shows live data and I have RPMs which is where that info comes from. In fact all the live data seems to be okay but without knowing what the output should be I might be wrong.

I might have the cam position sensor 180 out but I need 2 pair of hands, (actually 1.5 pairs) to test out that theory.

Any and all help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Distributor or Coil packs?
It does sound like it is out of time. Have you tried pulling off each spark plug wire to see if it makes a difference when it is running?

No distributor, Coil packs. I have a spare and swapped them out. No difference.

I would go a head and take the cam shaft position sensor back out and make sure it is installed correctly.
Make sure the engine is at TDC on the compression stroke.
I like to put a wooden dowel in #1 cylinder to make sure.
If you read the comments on this video they are saying not all of them are the same. Even if it is off one tooth your engine will run. Ask me how I know.

I reinstalled the the cam position sensor per procedure and TA DA! It now runs fine. The video is 180 degrees off, which I figured out when I took a look at my old sensor, which was my problem. How it ran at all I'm not sure.

BTW I couldn't stick my finger in #1 hole and turn the crank, (hence the prior 1.5 sets of hands comment). Though I could see #1 plug while turning the crank. so ...

I slightly loosened #1 plug and spayed it down with soapy water while turning the crank to make bubbles to determine the compression stoke. Then dialed in TDC with the timing marks on the main pulley. Worked like a champ!

That is why I put a wooden dowel pin in the spark plug hole. You can watch it and when it is at its highest you know you are at TDC.
Glad you got it figured out.
Is it too early to start a Duke's Memorial Day weekend post?
I am off Tuesday till the following Tuesday. I could come early and we could hit the Hillbilly ranch?

Sure! Sounds like a plan. Where is Hillbilly at?
