No, that's not me, that's Mark Y. Thanks Jon M. for letting me experience a ride on the trails in a Jeep, even if part of it was dragging the side down the gully. I believe I broke a front axle Tracta Joint (http://www.monasfts.com/images/TractaJoint.jpg). I'll need to pull it apart to confirm it, but I'm sure that's what broke on the front right of the M37. No hard running today, and it made some noise, but fortunately I was taking off on the trail from a dead stop when it let go. It locked up the wheel so I had to pull the flanges to let the wheels roll. However I could not turn right as the joint was in a bind and preventing steering movement. Had to lock the front axle in and roll back a little then forward to get it out of the bind so I could steer. I was able to get off the trail and back on the trailer in rear wheel drive high range. Wondering if I missed anything during the winter tear down or if the lockers added that much extra stress for as little and gently I've been using them. I only use them when needed and not at high speeds, and not engage (turned on) when it's under a load. Oh well something else to work on. Now to get it apart and get parts and get it back together for the Labor Day weekend.

Thanks,
Will

I pulled the right front axle, and I did indeed destroy the Tracta Joint. It looks like possible one of the "C" ears of the inner axle let loose first, then the other and one of the outers let go next. Still cleaning the axle housing, but some scrapes and gouges. The major scrape/grooving goes 7/8's of the way around and was likely done when I came to the stop. The bronze bearing in the spindle was wore on the face that mates to the axle side surface. The bearing was installed new, so I'm not sure if it caused the joint failure, or is a result of the joint failure. The axle housing bronze bearing has a cut into it from the broken axle. So so for I will need a complete axle assembly and two new bronze bearings.
Thanks,
Will

Duke's Off-Road - Thanks!

Post by wdln »

Starting a new thread for the thank-you's and damage reports... I'll move Will's posts over too. Thanks to Steve, Sally and everyone who makes these trips a blast to go on. I'll also say thanks to Jon, Matt, Steve and Will for parts and assistance chasing down my electrical "gremblins" (which turned out to be a loose engine block ground cable) and to the whole Brown family for helping out with my trailer tire situation on Friday.

BTW, for those of you keeping score on the Curse of Fraser's Trailer Tires, I lost the last of the original tires that came on the trailer on 474 coming home from Duke's. It didn't blow out, but it did grow a bulge out of the side and tread surfaces and bumped around as I limped it the last few miles home. This makes three "bulgies" and one outright blowout all in the last month. Those tires all just decided they were ready to go, all within 150 miles of each other. The car tire I got from the Brown's, on the other hand, did just fine. I'll probably keep it as a spare.

If you have photos or videos, send them my way!

Dave

Posting up to say that I had a great time at Dukes once again. A big thank you to Sally for keeping us all in line and for taking care of everyone. What did we miss in the damage report..... I saw a broken mirror and a light on Jeff's TJ, I tweaked my windshield frame, Becky had an issue with a fender flare..... Oh I almost forgot, Kelly's YJ almost burned to the ground right in front of Steves house. Thanks go to Mark Yocum for use of his fire extinguisher.

Thanks again Steve,

Bob and Duke broke a hub.
Thankyou so much for having us Duke.
I think I will start running my tires at higher pressures. I think that is the reason I layed my Jeep on it's side at Harlan County. If you watch the Perfect rollover 2, around 0:52 you can see that rear tire rollover on to it's side.
Thanks so much to Duke and my lovely wife for doing all the cooking!

Thanks to everyone that attended for making this one of the best Duke runs yet! Especially Sally, I don't know what I would do with out you. (Yeah I do, plan, shop, prepare, cook, clean, repeat and yell ... Let's GO People!)

A Special thanks to "Crazy Bob Cat" Jeff who, while finishing off the boulder placement in Satan's Crack, scared the hell out of us. And that from a group of on lookers who are usually on the other end of scaring the hell out of people watching us. Now that's scary :o

Thanks everyone for the exciting weekend. Duke, the hospitality was great and thanks to you Sally for all the great food. I'm already looking forward to the Halloween Run and another opportunity to hit the trails.

Duke, I'd love to hear about how you broke the hub. Spill the beans.

Thanks Duke for another great time, and Sally for all you do.

Now if I could just handle the Jeep like it was a skid steer, I would of tried Spider Gulch. ( I think thats the only one I haven't completed)
Or I could bring larger equipment so we can make Satens Crack tough again.
See ya next time

I thought you were thinking about the Dana 60 axle shaft upgrade?

I was, am, we'll see. Based on getting the truck back on the road fast, and the axles weren't as hard to find or as expensive as I was afraid they would be I bought a set to get back on the road.

The Dana 60 axle upgrade that Bruce is doing also required you to change the spindles and Hubs, not just the axles.
Thanks,
Will

I took my lookout apart and it turns out it's fine! Gotta love a D60! The piece that slides in and out to lock the hub got cocked. The stub shaft is a bit too long, a problem we discovered when it was first assembled it but I just went with it. It's not allowing the seal that rides on the back of the spindle to seat properly, allowing debris into the hub, and also not allowing the lock out to engage fully. Taking it to a machine shop on Monday to have it shortened in a milling machine. It's too awkward to chuck it up in the lathe or my cutoff saw to get it straight. The only odd thing is the other side is fine :?:

What stub shaft are you running? Both 77-88 and 88-97 ford applications should be 11.4".

I had Moser make me a set based on my measurements from the stock ones. There 11.5+" ... Hum? I wonder if there too long? There Dana 70 outers.

Well 6 days later, the truck has two NOS front axles, and two Foote Rear Axles as well as new front axle tube seals and bushings, replaced right spindle, and right hub bearings and races and seal. It's amazing how tight the new Tracta Joints are. I was unable to put the Selecto Lock-out Hub on the new axles, as it was way to tight on the splines. The drive flanges went on with no problem though. Everything turns and seems to work correctly and no noise at all. I still need to install the new Power Steering Pump and PS Oil Cooler, should get that done tomorrow.
Thanks,
Will

Guess I can scratch "pull M37 front axle parts for Will" off my to-do list for the weekend. :)

Fixed my trail damage, the 1157 light bulb from the left rear. It is actually cracked and contains water, must have been hot when it went under water. The bulb has an artistic tie-dye look now....

Fraser, Thanks again, I hope not, but I might have to take you up on the axles in the future. I could not install the lock outs, so the "fuse" that they provide is gone and I'll see what brakes next, hopefully nothing ads I'll be taking it a little easier.

To anyone interested in following the continuing saga of what's-wrong-with-Dave's-Jeep-now:

In addition to the loose ground cable, the starting issues that cropped up at Steve's were in part caused by a mechanical failure in the ignition lock cylinder. Today as I was taking the steering column apart to poke around, the lock finished breaking completely and would no longer operate the switch at all. The end that drives the push rod going down to the switch completely broke off. I should have a new one on Tuesday, along with two new keys.

I've also rewired a bunch of stuff and put an extra fuse panel in the glove box.
