Brian, I think I will have a rider this trip. Don't want to promise a seat that might not be open.

Re: Badlands March 22
Hello All. I have a 90 Jeep Wrangler which I have been using as a primary vehicle for about a year after several years of occasional driving. I have been putting a lot of highway miles on it while commuting and fixing problems as they arise. Finally I think it is driving well enough for me to consider taking it off road. However, I have practically no experience with real off-roading and my vehicle is pretty much stock. There may also be some components which have worn over time and may not be in ideal shape (ie leaf springs). I would love to go with you all on your trip to the Badlands, as you are probably going to pass through Champaign or close to it on your way there, so that I could have experts who would be able to give me pointers and help me out of a jam if I got stuck. It would also be nice to ride along with some modified jeeps so that I could feel what it is like to ride on a more aggressive trail than my stock jeep could handle at this time. I looked at your checklist, and several of the items are areas that I have fixed recently, but there are some off-road accessories that I may not have yet and am not sure if I should purchase before I am able to see which ones work the best. Is there anyone from this area who might be able to take a look at my Jeep and see if it is ready? I would also like to ask some more specific questions about equipment, but don't want to clutter this thread. Could I get some contact info from someone who is experienced in this area and wouldn't mind sharing their expertise?

If your Jeep is in decent mechanical shape, which sound like it is. Has decent set of tires, i.e. not bald, has tow points front and rear, (if you have a receiver hitch, that will work for the rear, but don't go out and buy one), so we can give you a tug if needed, perhaps a basic set of tools, and a spare tire. You stated that you took a look at the checklist. With the exception of the safety gear, i.e. seat belts etc, most is recommended not required.
We would love to have you join us! The Badlands is a great place to get started in off roading. I'm coming in from a different direction than most of the club. Perhaps someone will post up and tell you where to meet up.

my son and I are planning on going. what time are you all planning to arrive there? thanks cant wait to meet you all
Re: Badlands March 22
Thank you. If it would be easier I (and another friend who is thinking of buying a jeep and wants to go) can meet you all at Attica at a certain time since you all might not be driving through Champaign at any specific time. I'm not sure when we should arrive, and might need to have someone's number for contact purposes but don't know how I should post mine as I think we were encouraged not to give out info on this site.
Also, as I didn't hear from anyone around here I may need to ask some generic questions on this post. I do not have a CB so I don't know the best way to communicate with anyone else on the trail; I suppose I could just stop and flag down the next Jeep in the line if there is trouble but unfortunately I wont get any warning from the next vehicle. I did see some Motorola talkabout "walkie talkies" on sale but I am not sure if they can dial in the same settings as the CBs. If not, there are some CBs around but I don't know which one to get or if I really need one. I have a trailer hitch in the back, I believe a hidden hitch model; they sell a hook for the receiver locally if that is something I should get. I only have the stock jack but I have a hard time getting it to work for some reason, as I don't know how to get it out of the holder (strange problem I know). I see the HiLift jacks online if I should order one. There are tow straps in a variety of lengths and widths...I see 20 feet by 2 inch commonly with 7,000 lb vehicle and 15,000 lb strength if that is enough. If possible maybe I could borrow a jack and tow strap if the need arises? My apologies for the long posts as this is all somewhat new to me.

The Badlands open at 9am eastern time, which is 8am for us. We normally get to the park between 9:00 to 9:30 and park in the upper parking lot. Look for the large group of jeeps with the club sticker on them (upper left hand corner of the forum). The walkie-talkies do not function like a CB. If you do not want to install one permanently, you can always pick up a handheld model. You will be good to follow along on this run without a jack or tow strap as the other members have them. Best to look at what we are using and pick one up after that. I suggest a 3" strap at minimum. It is also best to go out with a well equipped group before you sink a bunch of money into accessories to be sure it is something that you like to do and will continue. You can send a private massage to myself or anyone else going so we can contact you.

Re: Badlands March 22
I plan on leaving Stiners Corner gas station in Morton, next to the Burger King at 6:30 Saturday morning. The address is 1800 N Morton ave. We should be on the trails by 10:00 their time. I assume we plan on hitting the Beef House on the way back.

We are going
Re: Badlands March 22
Hello everyone. I would like to thank each person who helped make my first real off-roading experience such a great one, from those who had to pull me out of a sticky situation to those who helped me open my crushed tailpipe to those who helped me deflate my tires to the proper 15 psi, and anyone who just offered me a hand to shake and some advice on how to properly clear an obstacle...basically everyone there. I am hoping my friend Louis will be able to persuade his wife to buy one sometime soon; maybe I will have to let her drive it on the next trip to convince her. We were wanting to buy several beers for you all but seemed to get separated from the group. Maybe we can do it another time. Thanks again--Scot
