2015 Big Trip Harlan KY

Post by TSEJEEPERS »

Next years big trip planning is underway.
So far we are planning on going to Harlan Ky/Black Mountain Adventure Area. 563 miles from Morton. http://www.harlancountytrails.com/black ... trails.php
The dates (tentative) are May 16 thru May 25.
From what I understand there are two trail heads. One is in Evarts Ky and the other is in Putney Ky.
I have been looking for cabins to rent.
I have found two.
The first one is in Evarts.
http://www.visitblackmtncabins.com/Blac ... lcome.html
The only problem I have with this one is the kitchen does not have a stove, only a microwave.
The second one is in Putney.
http://www.harlancountycampground.com/
I looks alot nicer, problem is though they are already spoken for Memorial Day weekend.
Comments and opinions are appreciated.
I know there are more places to stay than the ones I have posted. I just can not find them.
If anyone can find more post them up!

My parents worked in this area for awhile a couple years ago. It is pretty sparse in this area because of so economically low. I can pick their brains and maybe they still know someone local. It is a beautiful area from their pics. There are 4x4 only trails in addition to the park for sightseeing type riding in the Daniel Boone Forrest also. If I remember right. I'll see what info I can get.

I don't see the lack of a oven as a problem, we'd just need to adjust.

I have 2, 2 burner cooktops, and a small oven we could use.

No stove would also mean no pots or pans, and possibly no utensils.

Here's my thoughts on cooking without a large stove.

Breakfasts,
Bacon and eggs
Bacon/sausage/cheese/eggs biscuits. Biscuits cook before hand, frozen and thawed, or use English muffins. Or, baked in my oven 8 or 9 at a time.

Sausage gravy, biscuits as above.

Sausage links and pancakes.

Repeat as needed.

Fried potatoes added to any meal.

Dinner.

Hamburgers.
Pork chops.
Steak
Spaghetti
Possibly pizza cooked on a grill.
Chicken.
Chicken with noodles and Alfredo sauce, and Broccoli.

That's 7 meals, add veggies and chips or fried potatoes. Mashed potatoes may be a option as well.

Some one refresh my memory on how many times we used Dukes stove on the big trip in 2013.

A stove/range is not a deal breaker.
We need to figure dates though.
I know there are people who would like to go that have kids in school and others that are working at the time the trip is scheduled.

I am in, at this point I don't have anything on the calendar, but something about these trips always seems to get in the way. But with you being in my neck of the woods it should be a lot easier.
I am out of town and it looks like I will be for a bit.

Sounds very fun. I"ll plan on going! IF we get to do a "site seeing" trail ride I might even be able to convince my wife to go. SHe has never been out with me...too scared. A REAL easy but pretty trail could change her mind!

ONe thing I did notice with the last trip we did (FLat Nasty). We did NOT go hungry! THe lack of an oven won't slow these cooks down! Lol.

Thanks for checking for cabins to rent. I am definitely interested in this trip. I agree we might want to move the date if possible to give others a chance to go.

I should be open to almost any date but I like using the holiday. It's a day people that don't get vacation pay would most likely be off anyway. If anything maybe move it so the holiday weekend is at the beginning instead of the end.

Vicki likes the idea of using 1 less vacation day. Dates don't make any difference to me.

Who is going to camping/trailers and who is going to stay in a cabin?
I have e mailed a number of places and have only heard back from only one.
That is My old Kentucky Home @ Brittains Creek.
http://www.my-oldkentuckyhome.com/home/
They are open for our dates.
I shot them a number of 20 people and this is what I got back.
We can accommodate 20 . Our regular price is $25 per person per night= $500 per night. Because of the extended stay of 10 days, we will offer 25% discount=$375 per night. Ten nighrs =$3750.00. We require a 2 night deposit to hold reservation=$750.00.
Does this look good to everyone?
I need to get a approx. head count to make reservations.

Joy and I are interested in going but don't think we can make those dates work. School is still in session through May 22, with graduation on the 24th. However, with snow days, we will probably go into the last week of May. For us to be in, we would probably need for the trip to be in June.

If the dates stay the same, depending on school, we might make it down for a couple of days wheeling though, just not the whole week. Is there a hotel close by?

Look at www.harlancountytrails.com for more trail info and stuff in area. May want to try Pinesville and Middlesboro areas for accommodations. It's not a very long drive to park. I'm gonna bug parents this weekend again for info.
