The BIG trip 2020

Looking into the idea of going to the Black Hills in SD in June. The club went there several years back. Besides wheeling there is a lot of sight seeing to be done in the area, Mt Rushmore, Deadwood, Sturgis, Custer's Last stand etc. (Spoiler alert! He lost).

Jane Peters is exploring for a place to stay, and I'm going to ping the Black Hills 4 Wheelers who help guide us about last time and see if the trails are still open to the public, etc.

Post up your own thoughts here about this idea or any other alternative locations for the Big trip.

Matt Adams sent me a copy of the "Top Secret" cross reference of Rock Crawling Trails to Forest Service Trail numbers and coordinates we promised not to publish on the Web from a club in the area the last time we where there.

Apparently it's no long top secret as it's posted on their website

Here is the link to the Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM) ... https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/blackhil ... EPRD533421

The Black Hills offers over 3,600 miles of motorized travel on the forest, including over 700 miles of system trails. For further information, contact a local Forest Service Office. Also check out the OHV Riding & Camping webpage.

I think my folks are going to join us again. So, two couples. Joy, Shannon, Lyle and Karon. If not enough room for us, we can find our own place.

We are interested, two of us.
We need to narrow the date down so we can see if we can get it off or not.
I did start and move my Jeep yesterday!

Kim and I are interested but cannot commit yet to any particular dates. Kim's son is joining the US Army at the end of January. Shortly after that we hope to get the dates of his basic training graduation and the AIT after that, which is likely to be in June, we think.

If you guys are still looking at alternate trip ideas Hot Springs ORV park in Arkansas is a really fun place with great scenery! Definitely worth checking out sometime for anyone who hasn't been.

Thanks to Bill for directing us to the forum thread for the 2011 South Dakota trip. Gives us an idea of the trail ratings & a link to get a trail permit if we want to get it in advance. Not sure if the trails are any easier to find 9 years later.

Due to Covid-19 Kat and I along with Bill and Vick have moved our reservation at mystic hills campground from the date of the big trip to 2nd weekend of Sept. I don’t feel safe going in June but since we’ve never been to Deadwood we still want to make the trip and are hoping by Sept. things will have gotten back to some degree of normalcy.

Al,
What dates do you think you would be in the campground in September. Jessie and I would be interested in going then.
Thanks Bill

We moved our reservation at Mystic Hills campground to sept. 11 to 16. Our plan is about half and half sightseeing and jeeping. Then we’re going to spend a couple days around the badlands.

As this is our first major trip (jeeping) Are there things I need to get to make sure we are good for this trip. Trail permits? CB and things of that sort. Also are we traveling in a group to get there? If so when and where are we leaving from?

I believe we need trail permits, I'll check. A CB is not a must but I would recommend having one. Tools and recovery gear are suggested to deal with what ever happens out on the trail.

I don't live in the Peoria area and will probably head out on my own, but folks in the Peoria area generally caravan together.
