Antique Vehicle Plates

Post by Jill Martin »

Some of you may know about the new law that is now on the books.

In the past a vehicle with antique plates on it could only be driving to and from a parade, demonstration, and testing.
The new law states that with an additional "fee" ($45.00) you can drive the vehicle anytime between April 1st and October 31st.

I will be switching over my plates for the Jeep and Town Wagon. Even with the additional fee it will be cheaper than the regular plates.

The drivers license offices do not have any more information about this at this time. If you are interested, I would check back with them in Feb. or March.

So it would be $25 + $45 = $60, for a 3-year plate or just one year? I thought antique plates were a longer renewal.

I was told that it was 30.00 and it would expire in 2014 for the actual plate. You can still use it normally,(limited use) but if you want to drive it like a normal car then you can pay the additional 45.00 for unlimited driving between April 1 and Oct 31.

I would assume this is for a regular antique plate ($30) and not a vanity antique plate.

I will find out more when I go to switch the Town Wagon at the end of the month. I will be switching from a regular plate to a antique plate.

The lady at the drivers license office in Pekin was actually helpful. She called Peoria to find out what they knew about it and then she called the lady who wrote the bill. Her response was, well we haven't worked out the paperwork yet. Image that!!

So don't rush in to your local office to get more info, cause they don't know.

Historically the IL antique vehicle plates have been good for five years at a time, but perhaps all expire the same year, 2014 this round. So if purchasing now, the fee would be prorated to 3/5 of the full rate.

Does the vehicle have to be 20 years old or 25?

25, unless they changed that too. Looks like they have not yet updated their website with the new info.

They wouldn't have updated it yet because they don't know how it is going to work yet. : )

You have got to love a politician who was probably educated as a lawyer, who has a bill written for him/her that they probably didn't read, that doesn't even clearly define the law enough for it to be implemented. Now we get to employ more lawyers to help interpolate it and write more rules to enact it.
Thanks,
Will

We maybe have been lucky, but we have had an antique plate on the Scrambler and on the 74 VW for over 6 years, drive them whenever, to whereever, and have never been stopped. (Knock on wood!) BTW, VW has been sold!

Jon has them on his vehicles, and has never been stopped. But, I know as soon as I put them on mine, I will be pulled over. LOL

If you would learn how to keep your foot from putting the accelerator pedal to the floor all the time, it probably would help your chances!
