Lift and tires

Post by SNM1001 »

Hello all,
Kinda new to this, don't want to sound completely retarded but I have couple of questions
First, I got the set of rims as a gift they are 15x10, what size tires I can install on them?
I'm not sure if my jeep is lifted. I don't think I'll be lifting it anytime soon.
Second, how to figure out if the jeep has a lift:)?

I have 1988 YJ, 2.5 4 cylinder.
It's a project, finally got to the point of actually enjoying it.

Pictures would help.
With a 10 inch rim most people run tires that are 12.50 wide.
Example would be a tire that is 33x12.50x15. 33 would be the height of the tire, 12.50 the width and 15 is the size of the rim.

In my opinion, 10" is too wide of a wheel, unless it's a beadlock, for just about any tire that will fit on a stock or slightly lifted 4 cylinder YJ. Reference how many times Mickey lost the bead with 36"x12.50" tires. A 10" wide wheel will also be much easier to damage than an 8". If you're set on using the 10" wheels, consider an extra wide tire, greater than 12.50" (sorry to disagree Tom) which a 4 cylinder will probably struggle with, or keep the air pressure up.

Thank you for good points.
I guess I have to lift it a bit.
The stock rims and tires that came with it are useless and 10" is what I have.

One more thing, make sure the rim is offset enough so your tires don't rub the inside coil tower, which they shouldn't. But you never know. May have some rubbing when turning sharp, but that can adjusted up front.

How hard is to install the lift?
I heard there are two possibilities:
Body lift and suspension lift.
Which one is better?
And of course $$$, do it yourself or taking it to the shop.

Trying to prep my YJ to really long vac trip this summer.

I've got a 1" Body Lift on my YJ, and as long as the body bolts come out with ease it's an easy install. Adds some additional tire clearance with out raising COG. Next is to add a little suspension lift.
Thanks,

Remember, when you lift the body more than an 1" more than likely, everything else must be extended or lifted with the body. Am I correct?

Especially if more than 1", but even at 1" on a YJ the shift linkage (on an automatic) must be adjusted and the radiator/fan shroud lowered.

The 1" kit I installed on the TJ was pretty good, it came with the 1" adapter to address the 4x4 shifter, but it only wanted the fan shroud lowered 1", I lowered the fan a 1/2" and the shroud a further 1/2" to help air flow issues.
Thanks,
Will

I would agree. I was just saying what tire would work on that rim.
Lets start with the basics.
What do you plan on doing with this Jeep?
Offroading?
Daily driver, with some offoading?
Cruising with the top off during good weather?
Daily driver?

Sergei - good to meet you this evening. Check out this link, it should help you choose a tire size.
http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/wheel ... what-fits/
However, a 31"x10.50" or 265/75-15 tire should be used on a rim with a maximum 9" width (according to tire rack). So I think you'll be better off to save the 10" rims for bigger tires after you have a lift installed, and instead use your stock rims possibly with bigger tires until then.

It was good meeting you too. You had lots of useful info that I'm considering.
Definitely at this point I'm going with the lift, thinking about 2" or 4" because I want super swampers not all terrain.
And of course, I'm putting a snorkel.

Wtih a 4 inch lift most likely you will need a SYE and new driveshaft.
