Colorado 2016
We have been talking about doing a week in Colorado next year instead of Maob UT. Looking at the Ouray, Silverton, Telluride area to wheel. A few people have voiced interest in going, so now I'm looking for conformation as I begin the process of putting this trip together. We have talked about going in late July or early August that way most of the trails will be open. ( SNOW ) The Weeks of July 24th - July30th or July 31st - August 6th. Which would work better for you and if you are camping or want to stay in a house.

Count me in for 1 staying in a house. July 31 - August 6 might work a little better for me. I'll go either week. Thanks for planning the trip Tom & Sally!

Re: Colorado 2016
For those members who have been to Colorado and done some of the trails, what would you suggest we do? There was some discussion as to what jeep Tom and I might be taking to Colorado and what trails we might be doing. ( There was a little hand waving action from me at someone. Sorry Fraser! lol ) Not sure how much sceanic to technical challanging trails we want to do. Which leads to the question ... Which jeep do we take? I know we are not alone in this question. A number of members have different jeeps and take different jeeps to different places. So tell us what trails you have done and would do again. What jeep would be capable of doing what trails. I have the Colorado Backroad & 4-Wheel-Drive Trail books and they give a good description of the trails and what is needed to do the trails.

Re: Colorado 2016
When I went there with the club in 2000 (I think), we did several of the more well known passes like Engineer, Imogene and Black Bear. While these were amazingly scenic, they were nothing a stock jeep couldn't handle. Of course, back then, most of our rigs were stock, or close to it. I'm sure there are more challenging trails in the area, but I'm not familiar with them, so would need to do some research. I could go either way, scenic and somewhat on the easy side with the Grand Cherokee, or find a few more challenging options and take the TJ.
One option with Colorado is it is certainly possible to map out a route such that we take trails from one overnight location to the next, which would mean hauling camping gear in your trail rig and/or planning hotel lodging at various locations along a fairly well predefined route, assuming a larger group. I did this once back in 1998 in my pre-club days, but since I wasn't with a big group, there was no requirement for a lot of planning, we just camped or grabbed a hotel room wherever we felt like stopping. I suggest once we determine who is interested in going, we get that group together and settle on some sort of plan. Of course, feel free to do your own research and/or post here with your preferences.

Re: Colorado 2016
Joy and I are in! We could make either week work and are also fine with any of the trails. When we were there last summer, we didn't do any that were difficult....which was a-ok as the scenery was awesome. We did all the trails in the post above, except for Black Bear. We ran with a guy who rented a Jeep and that trail was off limits by his rental company.
If we stick with easier trails, rental jeeps may be a good option. His was a newer Rubicon, 3 inch lift, 35' BFG Km2, and off road bumpers. Wasn't too expensive either. Probably about the same cost as towing rig from Illinois, especially considering pulling through the mountains.

Re: Colorado 2016
Lisa, Allie and I are interested in the CO trip. I was there in 2013 for a 'dual sport' type trip comprised of camping, scenic and moderate trail riding. I think winch cable was only pulled 2 or 3 times in total amongst the whole group. On the moderate trails such as Chinamans Gulch, a locker wouldn't hurt. My very flexible vote would be for a mix of scenic/moderate trails and a mix of nice accomidations and camping. I don't think I can pull off putting Lisa in Allie in a tent for a whole week but likely a night or two. Allie would be 26 months old at this time. Perhaps the camping could be optional for those wanting to leave a home base for a night. If some participants want strictly scenic, perhaps we can plan the trip around the idea of a subset periodically taking a differnt trail, day trip, overnight, etc... but still spend significant time with the group as a whole. There's lots of options in the area. A day trip to Moab from Telluride isn't out of the question if some people really want to see it. There's even lots of options within 3hrs of Denver such as the following....
This is a great trail that you could do on 33's. The 2 or 3 more challenging obsticales on this trail have bypasses or more accomidating lines. In 2013, I did this trail on 285s with only my rear locker working.

Checking out places to stay. Found this one in Telluride. Once again, I know of at least 10 people who will stay in the lodging but need to know if others are camping. I'm thinking there might be 5 or so of you who may camp. It effects the bottom line of price per person. I have decided on the the week of July 31st - August 5th.
Thanks, Sally

Looks great! No sense lugging all the camping gear along if that place can be home base for the week.

Question. Relative newb to the trail thing. But are there fees for the trails? I have read Moab trails have BLM [bureau of land mgmt fees] does anyone know if these would apply here?

Re: Colorado 2016
I can't speak on Colorado, but we have never payed any fees to run the trails in Moab with the exception of several trails in the Sand Flats Recreational Area, most notably Hell's Revenge.

Thank you duke. Saw on moab easter jeep safari site where BLM fees were included in fees for the trails. So it left me wondering. And yes I am aware that is a big event and you pay guide fees etc. But since it mentioned it. It just stuck in my mind. Thanks for the quick response.

Re: Colorado 2016
Wondering what the definition of camping is. Are you guys who camp planning on a KOA? Cabin, primitive tent or just pulling off on a sideroad and sleeping in a sleeping bag or in your jeep on a mountainside. Any input is appreciated. We are genuinely interested in this trip, if i can swing the budget and time off work. Thanks.

Re: Colorado 2016
The people that are camping have toy haulers that also serve as campers.
I guess you would call it RVing more than camping.

Actually, since Sally tracked down a monster of a rental house, I'm not sure anyone is still planning on camping.

Re: Colorado 2016
The house I was looking at is not available for our dates. I went back and forth with the owners a few times and now it is totally off the websites. Since Al, Kat, Bill and Vicki are staying in Ouray, I'm looking for a couple of houses there. The hard part is finding somewhere with parking for the trucks and trailers. At least we will all be in the same town and not have to travel as far to see everyone. Will update everyone on here and Annual Dinner with the details. Thanks for you patience!!

Re: Colorado 2016
I have rented 2 houses in Ridgway CO. It is about 10-15 minutes from Ouray. The houses are a couple miles apart. To view the houses go to http://ourayvactionrentals.net. Click rentals, show all properties, look for Candlelight Cabin and Sunny River Ranch.
Price per person is dependent on how many people will be staying in the houses. This is who I have heard from..
Tom and Sally Evans, Mike and Jane Peters, Shannon and Joy Duling, Mike and Larissa Spencer, Scott and wife Dammerman, Steve Vohs, Larry Haas, John Geiselman, and Fraser Yarker. Matt and Lisa Adams, Tim, wife, and son Auten, and Mickie Hendricks are you still interested in going?
Everyone is welcome to make their own accommodations if you don't want to stay with the group or want to camp instead.
Once I have confirmation from everyone, I will give a price per person.
Now the Disclaimer! After June 1st you are committed to go! No Refunds! I cannot get a refund on the rentals after this date! So if you back out, you lose your money.
If you have any more questions, feel free to call, PM, or talk to me at the Annual Dinner.

I have contacted those who were questionable about going to Colorado. There will be 14 people staying in the two houses I have booked. The price per person will $367.00. Money will be due by May 15th. Once again after May 30th, there is no refund. You are committed to go or lose your money. You can PM, email, call or talk to me at the next meeting with any questions.
