Air bags
I have a question for TJ owners, that trail there jeeps, do you disable your airbags or not. I really don't want an airbag going off in my face but I don't know if what we do on the trails would set it off. How about it Fraiser, Matt, Steve, and anybody else. All opinions welcome, I've never had to worry about this before, my cj doesn't have them and if it did they'd probably be broke.

Re: Air bags
I have not turned mine off and at this point unclear if the bags even work. Not sure what it would take to set it off. Lynn crashed into a tree hard enough to bend a rim, pitman arm, brake caliper bracket and bust a lockout and yet no air bag.
In fact I'm pretty sure the drivers side no longer is wired to the sensor since I trashed the wiring in the steering wheel. It turns continuously in both directions.

Re: Air bags
Is there a mph hit required to set them off?

Re: Air bags
Mine are still enabled. I pulled the fuse once and all the gauges died too. Based on our collective experience, I think it's safe to leave them alone.

Re: Air bags
I'm assuming mine are still enabled. Clint Biederman here on the forum may have dealt with his in the past but he's currently skiing in WV. Perhaps he'll chime in when he returns.

Re: Air bags
I've thought that too. I have a switch to turn off the passenger side only.

Re: Air bags
I've got a 97 TJ and I've disabled both bags by disconnecting the yellow pigtails to the impact modules. As others have indicated, you have to hit something pretty hard to deploy them, so going through the trouble to disconnect them isn't worth it. I'll be plugging mine back in this spring, as I plan to drive it on the street more. Not sure what year TJ you have, but some have the airbag system tied to the starting circuit. I'd say let them ride as is, it's best not to mess with wiring unless necessary.
